Abstract
Samasana is a small island lying 33km of the southeastern coast of the Formosan mainland, and 76km north of Botel Tobago (Kotosho). Since, in fine weather the island is clearly visible from Taito and vicinity, the aboriginal inhabitants on the eastern coast as well as on the northern coast of Formosa have knowledge of the island, which they call Sanasai, Sanasan, Sunasai, Sanayasai, and Sunasayan. Besides, there is a legend among some of the Ami and Kuvalan tribes that Samasana island was their original home prior to their emigration to the Formosan mainland. The Pyuma tribe also seems to have some relation to the island, in that a ceremony is annually held in Hinan village, in which the offerings are made facing the island.
