Abstract
Four red cell enzyme systems of cord blood and mother's blood: phosphoglucomutase locus 1 (PGM1), acid phosphatase (AcP), adenosine deaminase (ADA) and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and five placental enzymes: PGM locus 3 (PGM3), alkaline phosphatase (AlP), AcP, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and peptidase A (Pep A) were studied by means of starch-gel electrophoresis and specific enzyme stainig in 110 samples obtained at birth in Nihon Red Cross Medical Center.
The distributions of gene frequencies and phenotypes of each system were presented.
As to red cell AcP, 6-PGD, ADA, placental AIP and s-GOT the results showed no difference from those of previous studies. As to PGM1, however, the allele frequency of PGM17 was higher than that previously reported in Japan.
No variant phenotype was observed for placental AcP and m-GOT. The gene frequency of PGM32 appeared to be higher than those reported in populations from western Japan. It was found that Pep A is probably polymorphic in Japanese as in Europeans.
