Abstract
The nature of germicidal action of colloidal solution of silver is based only upon silver ions, not upon colloidal particles themselves. Upon contact with oxygen colloidal particles are readily oxidised to silveroxide, from which certain quantities of silver ion dissolve into the solution and may act bactericidally. The existence of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere induces the production of silver carbonate which is more soluble than silverhydroside and a largger amount of silver ious is found in the solution effecting the bactericidal activity.
