Abstract
The cells of Escherichia coli K 12 grown in a liquid medium containing meat extract and homoricinoleic (13-hydroxynonadec-cis-10-enoic) acid yielded four specific metabolites which were extracted from the medium. These metabolites are 11-hydroxypeptadec-cis-8-enoic, 9-hydroxypentadec-cis-6-enoic, 7-hydroxytridec-cis-4-enoic and 5-hydroxyundec-cis-2-enoic (as its δ-lactone form) acids. Further degradation of 5-hydroxyundec-cis-2-enoic acid was negli-gible. Similar results were obtained by addi-tion of homoricinelaidic acid. Some possible reasons for the ceasing of the conversion are discussed.
Homoricinoleic acid was synthesized chemi-cally by one carbon addition to ricinoleic acid. 5-Hydroxyundec-cis-2-enoic acid lactone was also synthesized for identification of metaboli-cally obtained one.
