Abstract

The purpose of this study was to clarify biomechanically useful characteristics, such as from the kicker's motion and ball trajectory, with which the goalkeeper (GK) anticipated the ball flight pattern when the kicker shot the ball to various spots of the goal. Fifteen collegiate male GKs and thirteen collegiate male outfield players as kickers participated. The experiment in this study was emulated a shooting situation inside of the penalty area. Three-dimensional coordinate data of the kickers and the GKs were captured using two motion capture systems. The findings (the kicker whose dominant leg is right) were summarized as follows. 1) In the rightward trials, the kickers pushed out the ball to more rightward than the leftward trials. 2) The kickers' trunk and foot of their support leg were rotated to leftward when the kicker shot to their leftward than the kickers shot to the rightward. 3) It is difficult for the GKs to anticipate the shot distances from the GK and the shot height from kicker's motion, and these parameters must be judged quickly from the ball flight trajectory immediately after the ball impact.
