Abstract
This paper examines the recent trends of active learning spaces (ALS) in university libraries in Japan, and provides a brief description of the ALS in Kiryu University. It also presents the problems and tasks facing libraries in private universities. Among the problems raised are the following: securing skilled personnel, clarification of the library's role in the university, and the establishment of systems which enable the library director to take a leadership role in the university.
