Abstract
This paper systematically reviewed research on relationships between museum visitors and museum environments in the context of environmental psychology, and discussed some significant issues of future museum visitor research. Employing frameworks, constructs, and findings of environmental psychology, the author described the history of museum visitor studies and classified them. Then, prominent characteristics of museum visitors' behavior revealed in past studies were illustrated, and problems in the existing museum visitor research were pointed out. Consequently, it is implied that future museum visitor studies should build up a theory that can explain interactions between visitors and museum environments.
