Abstract

Genetic analysis and morphological observation of cultured Dolichospermum strains from Japan revealed that seven strains with straight trichomes were identified as Dolichospermum hangangense. While five strains from two locations had spiral trichomes and were tentatively treated as Dolichospermum sp. cf. circinale in this study, as their trichome shape differed from that of D. hangangense. However, based on phylogenetic analysis, these five strains could also be identified as D. hangangense. Both D. hangangense and Dolichospermum sp. cf. circinale are likely to have a wide distribution within Japan and may also be globally distributed.
