The taxonomic status of a little known Japanese species of Calypogeia, C. japonica Steph. is discussed based on comparative studies of distinguishing characters and ecological features. Calypogeia tsukushiensis Amakawa, a common species widely distributed throughout Japan, is proved to be synonymous with C. japonica.
