Abstract

This study clarifies the change of image toward budo among students attending budo classes after a half-term of university-level physical education classes have been completed.

In this study, 395 students were surveyed who had opted to take one of either karate, kyudo, kendo, or judo classes in the spring and autumn semesters as part of T University’s physical education classes. Students were asked about their image of budo, the structure of which was revealed by factor analysis. Further, we examined whether half a year of budo experience brings similar changes in image toward budo. The findings are as follows:

1) As a result of factor analysis, the four factors of “traditional culture”, “pleasure‒cheerful”, “pain‒danger”, and “silence” were extracted.

2) “Pleasure‒cheerful” and “silence” factors scored higher points after students took classes in karate, kyudo, and kendo.

3) “Traditional culture” and “pain‒danger” factors scored higher points after students took budo lessons.
