Abstract

During in vitro anther culture of wheat three developmental steps in microspore development were identified cytologically; the uninucleate to the multinucleate stage at the first few days, the multinucleate to the multicellular stage at 5 to 7 days of culture, and multicellular to proembryo stage. Many microspores at the first step were active to develop to the multinucleate stage regardless of the genotype. Genotypic differences originated at the second step :0f the less responsive genotypes the multinucleate microspores aborted drastically more than in the more responsive genotypes.
