Abstract
This paper reports on the latest developments as of January 2026 regarding the use of AI and related risk management by Japanese TV broadcasters.
Each organization began implementing AI around 2022 to improve operational efficiency. Its application in content production commenced in the latter half of 2024 and has been expanding rapidly. Those responsible for AI implementation report tangible benefits, including cost reductions and the creation of compelling content that would have been difficult to produce with human efforts alone. At the same time, because they have encountered cases where AI produced misinformation or inappropriate expressions during the production process, many note that verifying and correcting AI-generated content before broadcast requires considerable time and effort. Moreover, because AI’s generation process functions as a black box, some find it difficult to apply the traditional production style in which ideas are refined through team discussions.
In terms of risk management, each broadcaster frequently updates its guidelines to keep pace with advances in AI and shifts in public perception. They also implement initiatives such as employee training programs to improve AI literacy.
Broadcasters are currently in a phase of experimenting with AI-generated content—as if in competition with one another—by producing works such as “the first AI-generated drama footage by a Japanese broadcaster” and “Japan’s first variety show hosted by an AI.” Experts emphasize that it is crucial to deepen understanding of how AI should be utilized and accurately assess both its potential and risks in order to determine how to use AI without undermining the strengths of traditional TV content.
