Abstract
The NHK Broadcasting Culture Research Institute has been regularly conducting nationwide surveys of schools and individual teachers since 1950 to understand the current conditions of the media environment in Japanese schools and the current utilization of NHK’s educational services. The AY2025 survey targeted individual junior high school teachers for the first time in three years, focusing on five subjects: science, social studies, Japanese language, foreign languages, and mathematics. The survey methodology was partially revised from the previous survey.

The survey results showed that more than half of the teachers used the internet in their classes almost every day, indicating that the government-led “GIGA School Concept” has become well established in schools. In addition, the use of computers and tablet devices distributed to students on a one-device-per-student basis (“GIGA School devices”) reached 96% in classes and 78% in home learning. Different usage patterns emerged depending on the context: in classrooms, the devices were mainly used for internet searches and presentations, while at home they were primarily used for individualized learning with digital drill exercises.

Among the media-based learning and teaching materials surveyed, the utilization rates of NHK for School, YouTube videos, and digital textbooks for teachers each reached approximately 60%, highlighting the high level of use of video-based materials. This tendency varied by subject area: NHK for School and YouTube videos were widely used by science teachers, while digital textbooks for teachers by foreign language teachers.

Furthermore, generative AI was used by approximately 60% of teachers. The survey also revealed that while teachers are proactive in using AI for lesson preparation and administrative tasks, they are cautious about its use in the classroom. Appropriate ways of utilizing generative AI in the classroom are still being explored, and attention will need to be paid to how its use develops in the future—specifically, for what purposes and to what extent it will be employed.
