Abstract
Raman spectrum of polyethyleneglycol (PEG) in the solid state is measured.Several devices concern-ing the Raman spectrograph are made to avoid difficulties experienced in the measurements.Follow-ing Raman lines are observed: 1480 (m, b), 1280 (m), 1230 (w, b) 1145-1110 (m, b), 1060 (w, b) and 845 cm-1 (m, b).The vibrations of an infinitely extended helical chain of PEG can be treated with the factor group D (4φ/7) which is determined from X-ray diffraction studies. The character table, numbers of normal modes and selection rules are given. Almost all the lines observed can be inferred to be due to the vibration modes of the Ai species. The discussion on the assignments of several Raman lines is tentatively made from the point of view of the factor group analysis.
