Abstract

The adsorption behavior of methanol, ethanol, and 1-propanol on porous coordination polymer (PCP) synthesized from samarium ion and tripodal Schiff base ligand was examined in the liquid phase. Based on the Langmuir equation, the values of maximum adsorption capacity of methanol and ethanol for 1 mol of asymmetric unit of PCP were calculated to be 0.28 and 0.38 mol, respectively. There is a site where water molecules exist in the pore of PCP before alcohol adsorption. The estimated amount of alcohol adsorbed on this area (0.33 mol) is close to the values of the maximum adsorption amount calculated based on the Langmuir equation. This suggests that the part of the pore where water molecules existed became a specific adsorption site for methanol and ethanol. The maximum adsorption capacity of 1-propanol determined based on the Langmuir equation was 0.080, which was smaller than those of methanol and ethanol. This result suggests that 1-propanol adsorbs in a different manner from methanol and ethanol.
