Nitroglycol and nitroglycerin liberate both nitrous and nitric ions by the alkali hydrolysis. The investigation on the hydrolytic products to use them for the determination of the nitro compounds revealed that the estimation of nitrous ion was more advantageous than that of nitric ion.
The concentration of alkali had no great influence on the result of hydrolysis and the heating on a boiling water bath was desirable for obtaining good results. The amount of nitroglycol or nitroglycerin is obtained by multiplying the amount of nitrous nitrogen by 9.77. The absorption recovery by the midget impinger was low and a correction was necessary.
