Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the tensile strength and bond strength to cement mortar of bamboo elements treated by emulsions with the glass transition temperature of 4 and 33℃, and the effect of the curing method on the flexural properties of the emulsion treated bamboo-reinforced cement mortars prepared by using the bamboo-reinforcements treated by those emulsions with the different glass transition temperature. As a result, the tensile strength of the bamboo elements is increased with increasing the applied amount of polymer for treating the bamboo element, however the effect of glass transition temperature of emulsions for treatment on the tensile properties of the bamboo elements are hardly recognized. When using the emulsion having low glass transition temperature for treating bamboo elements and reinforcements, the effective improvement in the bond strength of the emulsion treated bamboo elements to the cement mortar and the flexural properties of the emulsion treated bamboo-reinforced cement mortars is recognized. Those properties are considerably improved by increasing the applied amount of polymer for the bamboo element and reinforcement treatments. Such influence of the use of the emulsion with low glass transition temperature is considerably depending on the curing methods of cement mortar for the bond test and the bamboo-reinforced cement mortars.
