Abstract
Biliary and urinary excretion levels of ceftazidime (CAZ, SN401) were determined in 3 patients. Also the clinical efficacy of the drug was evaluated in the treatment of infections in the field of surgery.
Concentrations of CAZ in bile and urine were determined in 3 cases. 1.0g of CAZ was administered by a single dose of i. v. drip infusion for 60 min., and the shift of the CAZ levels with passage of time was studied. Almost all of the dose was recovered from urine, and the biliary recovery of CAZ was less than 1%. In one case with renal dysfuction, delay in urinary excretion of CAZ was found.
CAZ was administered to 6 patients with infections in the field of surgery. The clinical effects of CAZ were evaluated as good in 1 case, fair in 4, and poor in 1 case.(The 3 cases on prophylactic regimen for postoperative infections were all evaluated as fair). The ‘poor’ case was the one in whon Salmonella strains were not eradicated.
As to side effects and laboratory findings, abnormal GOT and GPT values were recorded in several cases. But they were thought to be due to the underlying diseases, except for one case in which possible causal relationship with CAZ was suspected.
