Abstract

We performed laboratory and clinical studeis on biapenem (BIPM), a new carbapenem, in respiratory tract infections with the following results.
The MICs of BIPM against clinical isolates were determind with inoculum size of 106 CFU/ml.
The MIC80 was 0.1μg/ml for S. aureus (MSSA), 50μg/ml for S. aureus (MRSA), ≤0.05μg/ml for S. pneumoniae, ≤0.05μg/ml for B. catarrhalis, 0.78μg/ml for H. influenzae, 12.5μg/ml for P. aemginosa and 0.1μg/ml for K. pneumoniae.
Clinical evaluation of BIPM in 5 patients with respiratory tract infections was good in 3, fair in 1, unevaluable 1. The incidence of side effects was 2 patients and abnormal laboratory findings was 2 patients.
These results suggest that BIPM is a usefull antibacterial againt for respiratory tract infections.
