We performed basic and clinical studies on biapenem (BIPM), a new parenteral carbapenem antibiotic, in 7 patients with bacterial pneumonia and obtained the following results.
1. Sputum levels
After 300mg of BIPM administration by drip infusion, the concentration of BIPM in serum and sputum from a patient were measured. The maximum serum level was 12.4μg/ml, at the end of administration, and sputum levels were 0.5μg/ml, at 30 and 41 minutes after administration.
2. Clinical study results
BIPM was administered for the 7 pneumonia patients by drip infusions at 600mg/day for 8-15 days. The clinical efficacy was excellent in 2 cases and good in 5 cases. Bacteriologically, Haemophilus influenzae were eradicated in evaluable 2 patients. We noted no adverse reactions or abnormalities of laboratory findings.
On the basis of these results, we consider BIPM to be an effective and safety antibiotic for the treatment of bacterial pneumonia.
