A disaster-prevention training program was conducted for 31 4th grade students of Ishii Primary School, in connection with the flood disaster around the town of Ishii, Tokushima Prefecture, caused by Typhoon T1115 (Roke). The program was carried out over a period of 10 hours during integrated study. Students were grouped by their own interest, activated their research, and discussed the topic in presentations. They also became acquainted with knowledge related to the prediction of floods and how the intimate connection between natural and social sciences needs to be understood to prevent flood disasters. The students, with their parents, made refinement to the official hazard maps they had been issued and worked out other, safer escape routes. In addition, they wished that they could help quick evacuation of infants and the elderly.
