In this paper we introduce the principle of a three-variable linear nomogram and describe how to make a nomogram. Using this item, the magnitude of an earthquake is easily calculated from seismograms. Our nomogram-creation process, which uses Microsoft Excel 2016, is described in detail. A nomogram can be used not only for magnitude estimation, but also for learning about the logarithmic characteristics of earthquakes. Our process enhances the availability and possibilities of nomograms in educational seismology. The applications of nomograms for other fields of geoscience will be a future challenge.
