Slope failures occur repeatedly over long geologic time scales and are characterized by the present landforms as a result. Recent slope failures leading to landslide disasters can be placed in a series of landform formation processes. The realization of these processes leads to an understanding of the disaster risks latent in our living space. The Saijo Basin in Hiroshima Prefecture was selected as a case study to examine the relationship between the landforms and the disaster risks in the area, based on a diachronic understanding of the characteristics of the landforms that form the foundation of living spaces.
