Abstract

Rare earth element (REE) pattern, which is a normalizing method of REE concentration with an appropriate reference material, is an important geochemical tool used in several studies in Earth science for more than 50 years. In the early 2000’s, the view prevailed that the “REE geochemistry is over”, owing to the development of ICP mass spectrometry. In this article, I introduce a progress in REE geochemistry; REE organic geochemistry and REE stable isotope geochemistry. The former is an application of REE geochemistry to crude oil which has not been performed. The latter reveals the factors controlling the stable isotopic fractionation by combining speciation analysis.
