Abstract
Data assimilation is an interdisciplinary science to connect numerical simulations and real-world data and plays a central role in numerical weather prediction. Both simulations and sensor technologies keep advancing, and data assimilation deals with these large-volume and high-velocity "Big Data". Real-time processing of Big Data from high-precision simulations representing individual clouds and the new phased array weather radar data that capture rapidly-changing dynamic weather every 30 seconds is a real challenge. The revolutionary "Big Data Assimilation" technology aims to predict precisely where, when, and how intense rainstorms will occur.
