Abstract
In the past, it was the general practice to interpret the various aspects of pulmonary circulatory disturbance on the basis of a single system of the pulmonary artery and vein. Since the beginning of the 19th century, the relation between pulmonary circulation and bronchial circulation has been little by little clarified morphologically, but never physiologically ; The reason lies in the fact that the methods for studying cardiopulmonary function have not yet been developed. The author felt the necessity of close investigation about the relation between the bronchial and the pulmonary circulations, and since several years has continued to study it, using the new techniques for studying cardiopulmonary function which have been remarkably developed in recent years, while having regards to the previous studies by many workers. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the system and functional implications of broncho-pulmonary circulation from the results of anatomical and physiological studies (Fig. 1).
