Procedures of control of thermal cracking due to heat of hydration of cement are explained based on JCI “Recommended Practices for Control of Cracking in Massive Concrete” from viewpoints of design, materials, mix proportions, construction works and management. Methods of calculations of temperature, stress and crack width are also described. New results concerning precooling of concrete by the use of liquid nitrogen, characteristics of adiabatic temperature rise measured by a new testing apparatus and degree of restraint of structures subjected to continuous external restraint are discussed.
