Abstract
The Nagaoka Institute of Design is located next to the Furusato no Mori Complex in Senshugahara along the Shinano River in Nagaoka city, Niigata. This area is developed as a Cultur-al Exchanging Building zone. The Niigata Prefectural Museum of Modern Art, Industrial Exchang-ing Hall and Cultural Core Center are in this zone. The Institute has a total area of 115 000 m2 and the building area is 15 000 m2. This is composed of 6 building blocks architecturally distributed try-ing to give a nice environment for education in the Institute of Design. One of these is the atelier building which has 4 stories and a unique curve shaped roof. Precast prestressed concrete members are used to design this building, due to heavy snow from December to March, in order to finish the construction within a year.
