Abstract
Recent theories have suggested that narcissists have need for competition, power, and agency, rather than affiliation, closeness, and communion. However, it has not been investigated if these needs are fulfilled. Therefore, we proposed to examine the relationship between narcissism and the needs and the fulfillment of these needs in comparison to self-esteem. Participants were 259 Japanese undergraduates (123 men and 136 women). Needs for affiliation and competition and their fulfillment, narcissistic personality, and self-esteem were measured. Results suggested that narcissism related to the competitive need and its fulfillment, whereas self-esteem related to the fulfillment of affiliation and competition. It was suggested that narcissistic people's need for competition includes a certain amount of greediness.
