Abstract
Reality has been considered in terms of soul in previous studies of analytical psychology. There are two functions of soul, one is function of anima which immerses oneself in the world filled with the vivid reality, and the other is function of animus which denies immersion in reality. The way of experiencing reality is an important theme for counseling. The purpose of this paper is to clarify some of the mechanisms of the effects of counseling on reality through examining the case of an adolescent girl the author was counseling. The client had felt a sense of inadequacy in interpersonal relationships and had difficulties to immerse in reality. Through the process of counseling, the client became to be freer in relationships with others, to experience reality vividly, and to determine a course on her own. The author considered that the client adapted through experiencing the functions of the anima/animus. The author noted the following points as factors that activated the function of the soul and made the experiences of the client vivid realities: 1) the experiences that client was accepted by counselor; 2) imagination of the counselor on the client’s experiences; 3) activities by the client using art expressions.
