Abstract
The qualification review committee (2013.8~2016.8) of the Japanese Association of Counseling Science decided to consider new qualifications for counselors. As the certified psychologist qualification has been realized, the committee needed to discuss the current position of counseling in Japan and discussed what the committee should do for the development of the Japanese Association of Counseling Science from various viewpoints. A new superior qualification of “certified counselor” will be realized as “counseling psychologist” in the future. Therefore, this report will suggest a part of the path leading to it. The overall structure of the report was as follows: “what is counseling and what is a counselor (i.e. concept, definition, activity content, activity area, etc.)?”, “counseling psychology and clinical psychology”, “future prospects of counseling at school”, “current status and problems of counselor qualification”, “about international qualifications”, “what to learn as a counselor”. Based on these discussions, some issues of the Japanese Association of Counseling Science which need to be resolved were presented. Especially the important issues were to identify the concept and definition of counseling, to clarify what kind of counselor should be trained, and to consider concrete curriculum and training method to realize it.
