Abstract

Spatial tessellation is one of the most important spatial structures in urban areas. It represents census tracts, postal zones, market areas, soil patterns, and so forth. Spatial tessellations in the same region are often closely related with each other. School districts are sometimes based on administrative units, while market areas of different categories of shops affect with each other. This paper proposes a method for analyzing the relationship among spatial tessellations. Similarity between tessellations is evaluated by granularity and hierarchy. Relationship among tessellations is represented by a network structure and visualized as a two-way tree. The method is applied to the analysis of two sets of spatial tessellations to reveal the properties of the method and its measures as well as empirical findings.
