Abstract

1. The univalent chromosome of fluted, a primary monosomic of N. tabacum, may be designated as the F-chromosome. Then, normal carmine=23II+FII, and fluted carmine=23II+FI.
2. The recessive type, coral, a derivative of fluted, is shown to have arisen by a modification of the F-chromosome, which may be represented by F-co. Hence, normal coral=23III+F-coII, and fluted coral=23II+F-coI.
3. The de novo origin of a carmine-coral variegated type from fluted _??_×coral _??_ is described, and it is shown to depend upon the presence of a fragment of the F-chromosome, f-Co, containing the factor or factor complex for carmine as opposed to coral. Hence, normal carmine-coral=23II+F-coII+f-CoI, and fluted carmine-coral 23II+F-coI+f-CoII.
