Abstract

The relationship between university governance and university reform is an important research topic in Japan. The Japanese government recognizes that university reform has not progressed sufficiently and is often one of the reasons for friction between university faculty and university administration. However, in the United States, university administrators make an effort to establish a good relationship with faculty staff and make an effort to help the management work effectively.

In this research, I empirically verify what kind of management was implemented in successful university reform. I examine case studies from two large private universities. The results show that the governance system depends on the individual circumstances of each university. Also, university administrators can work to motivate the faculty and integrate the direction of reform. Policy adjustments can be devised to support this.
