Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to analyze and discuss the books Hundred Tales for Children: Tales Archive (Yonen Hyakutan: Ohanashi no Kura), published between June 1916 and January 1917. It was previously known that this book contained 15 Grimm's fairy tales. As a result of the investigation, 11 additional stories were identified as Grimm's fairy tales, bringing the total number to 26. A comparison of these 26 stories with the original Grimm’s fairy tales has been conducted to determine the extent of any alterations.
The storylines of all the Japanese translations are largely faithful to the Grimm's fairy tales. However, there are some changes. First, the character names have been changed to Japanese names, and the names of items have been replaced with more familiar ones for Japanese readers. Second, the endings have been changed to ensure that they are more suitable for children's education.
