Abstract
In order to develop a minimal distortion steel on case hardening, effects of Mn and Cr content on the hardenability that affects the distortion in quenching after carburization have been studied. Furthermore machinability, mechanical and carburizing properties have been examined.
The optimum chemical composition of new carburizing steel was found to be 0.28%C-1.0%Mn-0.6%Cr and bal. Fe.
The characteristics of this steel is equivalent to that of SCM420 and the distortion after case hardening is smaller than that of SCM420.
The low distortion characteristics of new carburizing steel is supposed to result from the suppression of the bainite and martensitic transformation at the core region.
