FOREIGN BODIES DISCLOSED ON RADIOLOGIC EXAMINATIONS IN THE ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL REGION

Abstract

The present study is based on the clinical and roentgenological observation of foreign bodies which were encountered in past 6 years at Okayama University Dental School affiliated Hospital.
The results are summarized as follows:
1) The radiographic evaluations of 10875 patients revealed the presence of the 122 patients of foreign bodies (1.12%).
2) The most common foreign bodies were root canal filling materials which were found in 23 patients, tooth or tooth fragment in 12 patients, contrast medium in 10 patients, silver alloy in 10 patients and unknown foreign bodies in 43 patients.
3) They included 56 males and 66 females. The incidence of foreign bodies were the highest in the third and the fourth decades.
4) Sixty-four patients (52.5%) were caused by the involvement of the dental or medical practice, and 16 cases (13.1%) were caused by the trauma.
5) The most common foreign bodies were located in the mandibular alveolar process and gingiva (52 cases, 40.3%), with the areas of the lip and cheeks (32 cases, 24.8%), the maxillary alveolar process and gingiva (24 cases, 18.6%), and the maxaillary sinus (23 casaes, 17.8%) following.
6) As to the retained duration of the foreign bodies, the periods were unknown in 79 cases, within 7 days in 23 cases, within 1 month in 7 cases, within 1 year in 4 cases, and in 10 cases the periods were more than 1 year without any untoward effects.
7) The patients with foreign bodies in maxillary sinus showed a tendency to have some symptom.
