Abstract

Papular-purpuric gloves and socks syndrome (PPGSS) is a concept advocated by Harms in 1990. It is characterized by purpura and erythema that is accompanied by pain and pruritus and is distributed on hands and feet. It has been suggested to be associated with human parvovirus B19 (HPV-B19) and other viral infections or with drugs. We report a case of a 75-year-old man taking prednisolone 15 mg for rheumatoid arthritis. Based on the blood test and histopathological findings results, we diagnosed PPGSS related to HPV-B19 infection. HPV-B19 infection should be suspected when a skin rash is distributed in the gloves and socks pattern. In addition, because early diagnosis of PPGSS is useful for prevention of HPV-B19 infection and early treatment, dermatologists need to recognize the disease concept.
