Abstract

Based on the hypothesis that foot dysfunction and toe deformity are the causes of pincer toenails, a study was conducted with 130 adults walking independently. Intended to reveal the relevance of pincer toenails to muscle strength of lower limbs, range of motion of ankle joint, hallux valgus, and deformity of the lesser toes, the study was carried out based on the classification of their pincer toenails by shape and location. The result, indicated that the pincer toenails of the great toe and the lesser toes were correlated with decreased dorsiflexion range of motion of ankle joint and that the pincer nails of the lesser toes were significantly correlated with the deformities of the lesser toes. In terms of shape classification, the correlations between trumpet-type pincer nails of the great toe and decreased muscle strength of the lower limbs and also between plicated-type pincer nails of the great toe and moderate or severe hallux valgus, as well as deformity of the lesser toes, were observed.
