Abstract
By examining common failure patterns in Scrum sprint retrospectives, we propose a gamification design
framework for redesigning retrospectives. Starting from failure patterns P1 to P4, integrated and organised from prior peerreviewed
empirical studies, we construct the GxR Triple-Lens Scheme (R-Lens, M-Lens, G-Lens) aligned with Derby &
Larsen’s five phases and team psychology concepts. We then apply this scheme to design the gamified retrospective method
GxR-4Ls by overlaying lightweight game elements—such as perspective cards, role cards, voting tokens, and team
experience meters—onto the 4Ls method. We present application scenarios, evaluation metrics/design, and preliminary
survey results (n=9) comparing a standard retrospective (Q1) and GxR-4Ls (Q2). This approach integrates insights from
individual methodologies, such as retrospective games and Ga-Starfish, and reorganises them into an explainable design
theory grounded in failure patterns and psychological mechanisms.
