Abstract
This report is based on a search of the National Diet Library’s (NDL) “Tokyo Sho-eigyoinroku” (Tokyo Business Directory) for hardware and hardware manufacturing-related businesses and provides a detailed look at the actual situation in Tokyo during the Meiji period (1868-1912). Many of the listed businesses no longer exist, but a few are still operating in the same area today. In addition, many anagura (cellar) carpenters were listed in this record.
(1) Hardware includes copper and ironware, bullion, hammered knife wheels, and hardware, and there are 395 hardware shops.
(2) Hardware manufacturing includes foundries, blacksmiths, brand makers, and tinkers, and there are 82 such establishments.
(3) There are 38 anagura carpenters who dig holes in the ground to build cellars.
