Abstract
Waste recycling is environmentally and economically beneficial. The paper proposes a product recovery network for aggregates. The model deals with recycling of aggregates, thus it is a reverse logistics network design problem. London region is selected as the study area, as recycling of construction materials like aggregates are in practice there for some time, while at present, is not in popular practice in developing countries. The proposed model is multi-commodity and capacitated facility location problem which can serve as the basis for development of recycling network in Asian countries. It is formulated as mixed integer linear programming with an objective of cost minimization. It was found that transportation cost was the single most significant cost component in the reverse logistics network. The model can be improved by incorporating features like uncertainty of demand and supply of the network and monetized environmental benefits of recycling in future.
