Abstract
We evaluated energy-saving performance and the CO2 emission of the snow cooling systems, under weather conditions in Yasuzuka district, Joetsu city, Niigata prefecture in Japan. The snow cooling system combined operation with a conventional air-source heat pump (ASHP) (for brevity the snow cooling system hereafter) is assumed to be equipped with a standard office building with total floor area of 4,133 m2 . We found the following results. When the cooling system is compared by a sole operation of the ASHP, the energy-saving performance was attained by 10-28% in proportion to the amount of snowfall (i.e., snow storage). An operation stage over the lifecycle shared 98% of CO2 emission by the snow cooling system, which reduces 17.4 kg-CO2/m2 over the past 21 years. The required cooling energy in five buildings equipped with the snow cooling systems was equivalent to two mountains of snow disposal yard.
