Abstract
Effects of the diet on the severity of atherosclerosis was investigated by feeding rabbits supplemented with cholesterol, corn oil and lard for 6 months. The following results were obtained.
(1) Corpulence of tissues such as the liver adrenal and kidney were most remarkable when the diet was supplemented with cholesterol and large amounts of animal fat.
(2) Serum cholesterols levels showed an early rise which was particularly observed when lard was supplied.
(3) Deposition of cholesterol in the tissues seems to occur at an earlier stage than in the aorta intima.
(4) Depot and subcutaneous fat showed a low I. no. and did not seem to directly reflect the nature of the diet whereas the tissue I. no. resembled that of the diet.
