Abstract
This second report presented additional data related to the energy requirements for the severely handicapped, particularly for those lying in bed all day long. Their basal metabolism, daily activities and usual food intake were measured.
Average body weight, basal metabolism and energy intake measured were 15.3kg, 26.3Cal/hr, 1010Cal/day, for boys aged 10.9 years, and 20.1kg, 29.4Cal/hr, 1081Cal/day for girls aged 10.1 years respectively.
The calorie consumption per day for those lying down is estimated to be 10% above their basal metabolism per day and for those lying and sitting above 20%.
