Analysis of Microscopic Structure of Ferro- and Antiferro-electric Liquid Crystals Using ¹⁹F-NMR Spectroscopy

Abstract

Static ¹⁹F-NMR measurements were performed using a high-resolution solid nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer. Samples used were 10BIMFn, whose phase sequences show the even-odd behavior with the length of their chiral chains. Dipole coupling constant was larger in the antiferroelectric compounds (n=8,10) than that in ferroelectric ones (n=7,9). From this result, it was found that the molecular conformation around the chiral part in SmC^* is different from that in SmC^*_A.
