Abstract
The two homologous series of monosubstituted (ω-[4-(4'-hexyloxycalbonylbiphenyl)oxylalkyl ferrocene; HBAF-n, n is the number of carbon atoms in the metylene chain) and disubstituted ferrocene derivatives (1,1'-bis[ω-[4-(4'-hexyloxycalbonylbiphenyl)oxylalkyl]ferrocene; bHBAF-n), which are shown in Figure 1, have been prepared. The phase transition phenomena of these compounds have been studied using the DSC and the polarizing microscope. All of HBAF-n exhibited no liquid crystal phase, while four of seven bHBAF-n showed the liquid crystal phase. These liquid crystal phases were identified to be a smectic C phase.
