Abstract
We studied the feasibility of ultra-low-frequency driving of twisted nematic liquid crystal displays. Transmittance variation, voltage holding ratio and image sticking were evaluated. The transmittance variation can be explained by the Maxwell-Wagner theory for multi-layered dielectrics. By optimizing alignment films, the obtained variation was only 0.2%. The voltage holding ratio of 99.0% for the frame frequency at 16.7mHz was achieved by using ultra-pure liquid crystal mixture.
