Abstract
A novel rubbing-free technique has been developed for LC alignment using photoaligned Chemically-Adsorbed(CA) monolayer. By using this technique, TFT LCDs have been trially-produced with good LC alignment. Molecules constracting the monolayer contain a photo-crosslinkable "chalconyl" group, and can be aligned and fixed by the irradiation of polarized UV light. The contrast of a test cell by use of the CA monolayer was about 370.
