Phase Transition Bihavior and Layer Structure of Liquid Crystal Phases for Nitrobenzene Compounds

Abstract

Some derivatives of 4-(4-Alkoxyphenoxycarbonyl) phenyl 4-alkoxy-3-nitrobenzoates and 3-alkoxy-4-nitrobenzoates were synthesized, and thermotropic behavior and the layer sturcture of the smectic A and C phases were examined. The layer structure is discussed in terms of the molecular structure calculated by semi-empirical molecular orbital method.
